The Pet Store Can't Do This

You Can Just Tell

Somebody at the market held one up and asked what makes ours different.

Fair question. It's a square of cloth. There's a whole aisle of these at the pet store for four dollars, printed in a factory, ten thousand identical, all of them fine.

Here's what's different.

It was somebody else's first

Every piece of fabric here had a previous life, or at least a previous plan. Somebody bought it. Somebody folded it. Somebody put it in a drawer and then didn't make the curtains.

Then the drawer got cleaned out and the bag showed up on our porch.

So the bandana on your dog is the end of a story that started in a fabric store in 1994. You don't get that at the pet store. At the pet store you get a bandana that has never been anywhere.

Both sides are different

Not a design philosophy. We ran out.

But we kept doing it after we could have stopped, because flipping it over gets you a second bandana and because a solid on one side and chaos on the other is a genuinely good look on a dog.

It doesn't need its own collar. Or it does. Your call.

Three ways in.

There's a sewn channel that slides onto the collar your dog already wears. There's an elastic scrunchie that pulls over her head in two seconds, which is the one for the harness crowd. And there's a snap collar built right into the bandana, which is the one for people who don't want to take anything off first.

Nobody ties anything. Ties come loose halfway down the trail and then you're carrying a damp square of cloth for a mile like an idiot.

The stitching is straight

Scrappy means resourceful. It does not mean sloppy.

The seams are finished. The snaps snap. Karie checks each one, and the ones that don't pass don't go in the bin, they go back under the machine. That part's boring and it's most of the work.

There's a label now

Four words sewn on the corner. Waste less. Wag more.

It tells you which end is up, which sounds dumb until it's seven in the morning and the dog is spinning.

There's exactly one

This is the part people don't believe until they see the shop.

One bolt makes six bandanas and then that print is gone forever. No restock. No waiting list. No "we'll make more in the fall." There was a bag on a porch, there isn't anymore, that's the whole supply chain.

And a cut goes to animal rescue

Rescued fabric, rescued dogs. That was in the plan before there was a plan.

So that's it. That's the difference.

Also somebody bought three yards of photorealistic bananas in 1994 and never used them, and now your dog can wear it. The pet store can't do that either.
